Although Apple just announced the iOS 17 beta, at this point you really don’t need to be a developer to get the iOS 17 update on your iPhone. Ideally, however, you should wait for a few more beta versions before installing iOS 17, as early beta versions may contain bugs.
You can always try iOS 17 on your iPhone and then restore it to iOS 14.6 a few days later when you play around with all the new features. The public beta of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is scheduled for July.

Back up your iPhone running iOS 16.6. However, it is strongly discouraged to restore this backup to iPhone after updating to iOS 17 for compatibility reasons.
If you’re going to use your iPhone as a daily driver with iOS 17 installed, do no. The first few beta builds will contain bugs and compatibility issues with third-party apps.
The good news is that Apple supports iPhone 7 and up with iOS 17. As for the iOS 17 release date, it will be out this fall, which probably means September.
